Why are you introducing the Pledge scheme?
The Pledge scheme has been developed by Resource Efficient Scotland (a programme delivered by Zero Waste Scotland) on behalf of the Scottish Government to motivate and inspire action on resource efficiency across Scotland and to provide a platform for proactive businesses to gain recognition for their commitment. This was outlined as a key action within the Scottish Government’s Safeguarding Scotland’s Resources consultation.
What’s the benefit of making a Pledge?
The Pledge is an integrated part of Zero Waste Scotland’s Resource Efficient Scotland programme and encourages businesses to develop and implement a plan to reduce their energy, water and materials waste, helping them to improve their efficiency. Many businesses who have taken resource efficiency measures have made cost savings for their business, often by making relatively small changes to their operations. You can find out more about the kind of actions businesses have taken in our case studies section.
Every business that commits to a Pledge will receive a certificate to demonstrate their commitment to the Pledge, with supporting marketing collateral available for use in print and online. Once the business has achieved all their Pledge Actions, they will receive a Bronze certificate. The business can then go on to make further Pledges with the ability to receive a Silver, Gold or Platinum certificate in subsequent years.
Each organisation making a Pledge will receive:
• A commitment certificate detailing their Pledge actions for display on their premises;
• Marketing collateral for use in print and display on their website;
• Publicity on the Resource Efficient Scotland website and wider media coverage where appropriate.
How do I make a Pledge?
Making a Pledge is really easy to do on the Resource Efficient Scotland website. You can choose between three and six actions to make up your Resource Efficiency Pledge. There may be one or more areas that you wish to focus on and we have suggested a range of actions under the following headings to help get you started:
- Business Processes
- Supply Chain
- Staff engagement
You can also search suggested Pledge actions by topic; energy, water, materials and waste.
Alternatively you can set up your own Pledge actions, Our Savings Finder Tool can help you identify areas for your actions, or you can contact us for help and advice by phone 0800 808 2268 or online chat Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Can I make my Pledge by phone or post?
In order to help you manage your Pledge, you will need to submit your Pledge online at the Resource Efficient Scotland website. You can then view and update your completed Actions via your personal online dashboard. If you would like any help or advice in setting up your Pledge, please contact us by phone 0800 808 2268 or online chat Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Who can make a Pledge?
Most businesses can benefit by becoming more efficient with their use of energy, water and materials which can lead to cost savings for their organisation. The Pledge scheme is open to any Scottish business that wants to take action and demonstrate their commitment to resource efficiency. However, we do ask that the person in the organisation making the Pledge has the authority from their senior management to do so and we ask them to agree to this when they submit their Pledge.
What help is available to set up and complete my Pledge?
The Resource Efficient Scotland programme offers expert advice, support and a range of online tools, such as the Savings Finder Tool which can help you identify actions for your Pledge.
You can also make a free call to 0800 808 2268 or use our online chat facility Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm for help and advice.
How much time do I have to complete my Pledge?
It is important to set a date to complete your Pledge so you can realise the benefits of your actions as soon as possible. You will have one year from the date you submit your Pledge to complete all your Actions. It is likely that you will complete some of your Actions sooner than one year but your Pledge will only be complete once all of your Actions have been completed. If you need help along the way, the Resource Efficient Scotland team are available online, over the phone and by email to help you realise your Pledge.
What happens if I don’t complete my Pledge on time?
It is a good idea to be realistic with the Pledge Actions you set yourself to ensure you can realise the benefits for your organisation in the first year. The Resource Efficient Scotland team will be available to help you every step of the way. By completing your Pledge within one year, you will benefit from achieving any costs savings for your organisation all the sooner.
If you don’t manage to complete your Pledge on time, you will not be able to take advantage of all these benefits, as well as being able to demonstrate your commitment to the environment to your staff, supply chain and customers. However, if your circumstances change and you do need to postpone your Pledge, please contact the Advice and Support team on 0800 808 2268.
How do I use the dashboard?
You first need to register on the Resource Efficient Scotland website. Once you log in to the site you can use the dashboard to ‘follow’ information and resources that are of most interest to you. You will also see a ‘My Pledge’ tab in your dashboard. This is where you can view and manage your Pledge and your Pledge Actions.
How will I know when I have successfully completed my Pledge?
The Resource Efficient Scotland team want to ensure you set Pledge Actions that are realistic, achievable and will benefit your business. If you choose three to six Actions from the list of suggested Actions, your Pledge will be accepted and we will provide support to help you achieve these actions. If you have chosen to set any of your own Pledge Actions, a member of the Resource Efficient Scotland team will review your Action(s) and may contact you for further information before your Pledge is accepted.
You can then manage your actions through your personal dashboard. If you complete all of your Actions within 12 months, you will have achieved your Pledge and will receive a Bronze certificate.
What happens if I fulfill my pledge sooner than the 12 month period?
That would be fantastic and means that your business can benefit all the sooner from the actions you have achieved.
What happens if my circumstances change and I’m concerned about being able to fulfill my Pledge?
The Resource Efficient Scotland team will work with you to help you meet your Pledge actions as much as possible. However, if your circumstances do change, you could postpone or make a new Pledge at a later date, or speak to one of our advisors for more help and advice.
If you decide not to go ahead with the Pledge, you will no longer be entitled to use the Pledge marketing materials or be able to display your Pledge commitment certificate in your premises, on your website, online or in print. However, you can still receive free help and advice from Resource Efficient Scotland.
Can my Pledge actions be based around the same theme, e.g. management?
Yes, you can choose actions from one area or across all three areas of procurement, management and staff engagement.
How does the Pledge work with other Voluntary Agreements such as Courtauld?
Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) is wholly supportive of all Voluntary Agreements (VAs) managed by WRAP colleagues in Banbury. This is why we have specifically created a Pledge Action to encourage businesses to join an appropriate VA. The Pledge seeks to offer a broader range of resource efficient commitments while we in turn use the specific action to encourage those who have not done so to sign up to VAs such as Courtauld.
Are there any terms and conditions associated with the Pledge scheme?
Yes, any business making a Resource Efficiency Pledge is required to agree to our terms and conditions, including that the person submitting the Pledge has the approval of their senior management to do so.
What are the most popular Pledge Actions with business?
Businesses will select and create custom actions which are most relevant to their area of work and internal objectives. From an analysis of Pledge Actions taken by signatories, it seems that the most popular actions are in the Business Process category and include reducing waste, reducing transport emissions and becoming an exemplar.
